Matt Shurtz

Congratulations to Matt Shurtz for being May’s Athlete of the Month!! Matt has been with us since January and has crushed it ever since. We have his bride Krista (get right girl) to thank for pushing him to MTS! Matt usually works out with the early morning crew, and has blended in great with that Motley Crew. He has many loves including, cooking, camping, and most of all he is a devoted family man. He is also well known as the Cliff Clavin of the morning group, you need a useless fact, Matt has it.

Occupation:
Physical Therapist

What did you do before joining MTS in regards to working out?
Did my own think. Mosty heavier lifts. Trained with Brian King for a while. Traditional squats, deads, back, chest strength training with free weights.

How long have you been with MTS?
6 months.

What’s your favorite workout/exercise at MTS?
I enjoy the circuit type training. I like the finishers. I like sustaining a good heart rate and working up a lather.

What’s your least favorite workout/exercise at MTS?
Anything that is heavier overhead or chest pressing movements. I’ve had 2 shoulder surgeries, so those movements hurt and are a not so friendly reminder.

How is MTS different than other methods of training you may have tried in the past?
I have always been able to motivate myself and program my own workouts. But after my 2nd shoulder surgery, I became frustrated because I couldn’t do that type of training any longer. MTS has been a blessing because they have been able to help me find alternative exercises that allow me to train and avoid pain.

How has MTS helped you attain your fitness goals or athletic endeavors?
It is easy to be motivated when you see success with your workouts and you are still having fun along the way.

What’s your favorite cheat meal/snack?
Vodka soda

Advice to those just starting out?
Make your workout time a habit. If you struggle with that, find an accountability partner that will help you through the harder times. Seeing results is a slow process. Don’t get frustrated. It’s always a work in progress.
